DEATH STAR FIREPIT
This fire pit started life as a compressed gas fuel tank. The sphere is made from 1/4" steel and is 43" in diameter. It sits about 7" off the ground and is supported by a tripod base made from heavy wall 2" square tube with wide foot pads for weight distribution. This fire pit is fully welded, heavy duty, incredibly detailed, and designed to last.
The sphere has the original holes for the gas valves which are on the bottom for water drainage. Loosely covering these holes is a removable concave disk that won't let hot ash from the fire to fall thru the bottom of the pit. This disk can be moved from the bottom of the pit to the center of the base under the pit where ashes can be swept thru the holes for a easy clean up and to further protect the surface the pit is placed on.
The "grill" part of the pit is a two piece design with a "table" in the center and a grate. The table is made from 1/4" steel plate modeled after a Ty fighter wing. The plate has four legs that go to the bottom of the pit. The legs sit in a bracket so the plate won't slide out of place and will always be level. It also has six solid round tabs on each corner of the plate to support the grate. This piece was designed to support the weight of the fire and to have a flat, solid surface for starting the fire.
The grate is made from 3/8" solid round bar and is supported in the center by the six tabs mentioned above and six other tabs welded on the inside of the pit to support the grate on the outer edge. This design will not sag or fatigue due to heat or frequent use. Both the center piece and the grate are easily lifted out for quick clean up.
The tripod base insures that the pit won't wobble and always be stable with three points of contact. X-Wing style fighters cover the three legs of the base. Each one of the three fighters was individually made using 1/4" plate and other various metal parts.
This fire pit is fantastically detailed, built for life, and is awesome.
